Getting engaged & planning a wedding is an exciting time! Before becoming engaged, many couples have discussed the type of wedding that they want to have. However, after getting engaged and getting families involved, expectations (and costs!) can quickly skyrocket. To keep this from happening, and to save yourself from stressing about money, here are 5 tips for keeping your wedding costs under control.
Start with a budget
Creating a realistic budget, (and sticking to it!), is the foundation for successfully managing your wedding costs.
When establishing your wedding budget, it helps to first determine what money will be contributed; for example, family members may have offered to pitch in, or it may just be the two of you paying for everything. Once you’ve determined who is contributing and how much, determine how much you and your spouse-to-be can reasonably set aside each month to go toward your wedding. Try not to rely too heavily on money that is uncertain, such as a bonus or tax refund; if those amounts are less than expected it can definitely put you in a bind as the wedding nears.
Determine what’s most important
As you begin planning your wedding, it helps to have a discussion about what is most important to you. Maybe you don’t care about serving an elaborate meal, but you want a gorgeous venue with amazing views. Or, perhaps you care less about having tons of décor, but you know you want your guests’ experience to be really special. Whatever you decide to be most important to you, you can go into the planning process knowing that you want to spend less money on the items you decided weren’t as important as others.
Set aside some cushion in your budget
It’s always a good idea to set aside 5-10% for unexpected expenses. There may be items that you forgot to include in your budget initially, and even small items like a cake-cutting set and stamps for your invitations can add up. To keep this from becoming stressful, and from exceeding your budget, it helps to have some money to fall back on.
This can be one of the most difficult things to do as you plan your Big Day – especially if you’ve spent any time on Pinterest! Keep in mind from the beginning that you will need to set boundaries, and know that there are creative ways to have a beautiful wedding at any price point.
Buying used items for your wedding is a great way to keep your wedding costs under control! Many brides buy brand new décor and accessories for their wedding day… and use them one time. Most of these former brides turn to the internet to sell these items; try searching for “used wedding décor” online and you will be directed to many sites where you can connect with them, and get great deals on decorations that have only been used once or twice. After your wedding day you can always sell the items to another bride, and put a little bit of money back into your pocket!
As you plan your wedding day, always remember what is most important – the love between you and your partner. Keeping wedding costs under control will feel like a challenge at times, but if you keep this in mind and follow these tips, you’ll experience less financial stress while planning and be on your way to post wedding day bliss.
